I came to cosplaysky.com with one desire - to take my Sherlock cosplay to the next level. Usually I’m the kind of guy who likes to go thrift shopping for cosplay pieces and sometimes I am successful. But up until now, I feel like my Sherlock cosplay lacked oomph. Let’s face it - Benedict Cumberbatch wears a distinctive and now-iconic coat made by Belstaff. There aren’t many coats like it. So in my search to obtain such a coat, I discovered Chinese company Cosplaysky first on ebay and then by their website. I was intrigued by the fact that they sold two different version of their replica Belstaff, one in linen and one in wool. Now, assuming you live anywhere outside of China, the linen version will cost you $189.99 (shipping included). The wool coat will cost you $219.99 (again, shipping included). I love cosplay, but I’m on a budget, and I’m sure many of you who read this are too, hence my decision to purchase the linen coat after much deliberation.
I am absolutely floored by the amount of detail that went into this coat. All the distinctive features of Sherlock’s Belstaff are here: the pockets, the red buttonholes, the back belt, it’s all here. They even have that fancy-looking crease in the back! I also like the color, especially in relation to its wool counterpart, which is more grey. Also, despite being made of linen, the material feels thick and might actually keep you warm in chilly weather (with a scarf and gloves of course!). Despite this being the cheaper version of cosplaysky’s two coats, you can rest easy knowing that though it’s not as close to the original Belstaff, you’ll get the best damn reproduction made of linen ever. Also, if you know your measurements, give them to the company. If you don’t know your measurements, get measured. Trust me, it’ll be worth it. They build these from the ground up to fit you just right, so give them as much information as you can and you’ll be happy!
It goes without saying that those who are real sticklers for details and screen accuracy might be displeased with the linen coat. The real thing is made of Irish tweed wool. Also, from what I understand, there are various inaccuracies abound with this coat, though I am not well-versed in the design so I can’t spot them. Apparently one such example is the buttons, a close-up of which is provided below. The biggest drawback I have with it is the pattern. The real coat has a bit of a checkered pattern to it, something that isn’t accurately reproduced here. I feel as if cosplaysky tried to compensate for it, but in a very bizarre way. If you look closely at my photos, you’ll see white specks on the fabric. They look okay in pictures, but let me tell you, if you should see it in person, you might think someone spilled glitter on my coat! It’s a noticeable and scarcely forgivable offense, as it really takes away from the beauty of the coat’s detail.
There’s also one more gripe I’d like to get off my chest, and that is that cosplaysky’s photos of this coat do not do it justice. Like, at all.
For this reason, I was a little wary of buying at first, even though I could barely afford ANY other alternative. It wasn’t until I saw this photo on tumblr and Deviantart that I was sold on it. I hope my photos prove more helpful to prospective buyers than the company’s own.
Do I recommend it?
Yes! If you want to cosplay Sherlock and you want to save money, I think you’ll find a lot to like to about this linen coat. I’ve been very happy with the response I’ve gotten from wearing it, and will be proud to give it its convention debut in 48 hours’ time. Though if anyone has any ideas on how to get rid of the damn sequined look, I’ll happily take suggestions.
I hope you find this review helpful. Thank you for your time and good luck in your future cosplay endeavors!
